A childhood fascination with films coupled with an inclination towards photography compelled Mikko to take up filmmaking. His stay in UP’s Film institute ingrained in him a solid understanding of the film language and a propensity for film criticism and analysis. Training under award-winning independent filmmakers taught him to improvise under the most frugal budgets; but it was his exposure to advertising production, having trained under one of the industry’s most renowned directors, that honed his technical skills. Mikko takes pride in having climbed the production ladder, which he claims is an important route for any director in order to gain a keen understanding of the entire production process. Way before he earned the director’s helm, he served as a production assistant, video editor, motion graphics artist, field sound recordist, and cinematographer. In twenty years directing over 250 TV commercials, he’s had the privilege of collaborating with some of the country’s best ad agency creatives, with his work earning recognition twice in Adobo’s Ad of the Month, a Bronze metal and four Finalists in the 2007 Araw Awards, and a Bronze trophy from Campaign Asia Pacific's 2011 Digital Media Awards.
